Alex Eggleston is the protagonist and narrator of YIIK: A Post-Modern RPG. His story begins on April 4th, 1999, where he comes home from college to a journey of mysterious events.

Personality[edit | edit source]

A typical twenty-something. He's just like you, in an alternate reality.

Alex is a liberal arts graduate who took longer than four years to finish his degree. He's very reluctant to enter "adult life," instead choosing to retreat into any form of escapism. This can be seen with his quest to find Sammy, as well as his apprehension towards driving or finding a job. He has a tendency to view himself as the main character, which manifests itself in selfish and thoughtless acts towards others. As the narrator, he often embellishes the story to appear more reasonable.

Relationships[edit | edit source]

Michael[edit | edit source]

It'd be easy to assume that Michael is Alex's "best childhood friend," but Alex seems to have pretty negative thoughts about him. He's often visibly bothered by Michael's jokes, probably because Alex is the punching bag for them. Towards the end of the game, Alex comes to realize some strange details about Michael. Michael apparently left Frankton when he was 12 years old, after he and Alex had a "falling out," further strengthening the fact that their friendship had always been strained. Additionally, in Alex's Mind Dungeon, Michael is characterized as Astronomer Dr. Aryabhata, who brags about their intellect and superiority over Alex.

Bizarrely, Alex seems to get along with Proto-Michael better, often agreeing with his insights.

Vella[edit | edit source]

Alex first finds out about Vella from a post about her powers on ONISM1999 ONISM Logo. Their relationship is initially tense, with Vella being frequently frustrated by Alex's carelessness, such as his attitude towards Rory at the end of the Sewer Dungeon, or his insistence on prying into her personal life, but she warms up to him over the course of the game (despite Alex not changing these behaviors or improving as a person). Alex seems to love, or least be immensely interested in her, but Vella only reciprocates these feelings at the very end of Chapter 5.

Rory[edit | edit source]

Alex is resentful towards Rory for leading the party into the sewer. He claims that Rory "acted like this was connected to Sammy", and repeatedly reprimands him for "lying", despite Rory only lying about what happened to his sister.

Over the course of the story, the player can choose to make Alex apologize and take steps to repair his relationship with Rory. If Rory dies, he regrets not being there for Rory and wishes he could have seen the signs and did something different.

Allison[edit | edit source]

Despite being Alex's sister, he rarely mentions her throughout the story. He mentions her in an ONISM thread, ONISM Logo as well as when he talks to Chondra about how she attended the all girls dorms in Easton University. However, Chondra points out how there are no all girls dorms at Easton University.

Since Alex rarely brings her up, it can be inferred that they had some sort of falling out which is upsetting for Alex to think about.

Story[edit | edit source]

Meeting a Mysterious Girl[edit | edit source]

Alex and Sammy on an elevator, right before her abduction.

Alex, a recent college graduate, comes home to Frankton. He finds a note from his mother telling him to go find groceries. Instead, Alex chases a cat into a Factory. There he finds his childhood imaginary friend Panda, and a mysterious girl named Sammy. It turns out the cat Alex was chasing is Sammy's pet, named Dali. While riding on an elevator to leave the factory, Sammy gets abducted by beings made of stars. When he returns home, Alex questions if what he saw actually happened. He receives an e-mail from a friend with a link to a post on ONISM1999, showing footage of Sammy on the elevator being kidnapped- but both Alex and Dali aren't there. After that he calls it for the night and gets some rest.

Alex dreams of a bunch of robed figures surrounding an android. He's woken up by Panda, who is frustrated that Alex didn't chase after Sammy, and wants him to go and find her. Alex goes to reinvestigate the Factory Hotel, but first finds a childhood friend, Michael. They discuss the footage of the "elevator girl." They both agree to investigate the Factory, since Alex claims the elevator footage is from there. Once they arrive, they are greeted by an entity. They manage to snap a few pictures before escaping near-death.

A Chance Traveller[edit | edit source]

Alex and Michael realize the photos they took were distorted by the entities, and they now understand they're dealing with something otherworldly. They post the photos on ONISM. Two weeks after the post, WindWay87 posts "MYSTERIOUS GIRL WITH MIND POWERS ONISM Logo", showing a mysterious girl that they both recognize from the arcade. The duo heads there to ask some questions. After a (violent) misunderstanding, they learn her name, Vella, and she gets interested in the online detective work they are doing.

Alex gets a PM from someone, saying their sister vanished in a similar way to the Elevator Girl.

"Hey man, I saw your post about the Elevator Girl and the factory she went missing in.
My sister vanished a few weeks ago, and there was some screwed up things with her disappearance too.
If you're interested in checking out where she was last seen, you should come to Wind Town.
It's east of the Factory the Elevator Girl was last seen in.
"

They call Vella up and head to Wind Town to investigate. There, they meet Rory Mancer. He gets the trio to follow him to a sewer in order to find his sister, where they end up encountering an Entity. Rory believes it's his sister, but Vella convinces him that it's his "Soul Survivor," a result of him entering the Soul Space. Rory explains that his sister didn't "disappear," but that she committed suicide. Alex, during this conversation, quite frankly doesn't give a shit. Out of nowhere, a Golden Alpaca appears and attempts to kill Alex, but fails. He instead kills Rory's Soul Survivor before challenging the party to a battle. The Golden Alpaca is defeated, and the party escapes to the surface.

Alex is infuriated that Rory lied about the situation concerning Sammy, but Vella and Michael are bewildered to how cruel he's acting. Rory runs off, and Alex's friends hate him.

Quest for the Mystical Ultima LP Legend[edit | edit source]

Time passes, and Alex's mom finally returns home to tell Alex that she has been fired from her job. She encourages Alex to get a job in order to help pay for the bills. This greatly upsets Alex, but he keeps it all inside. While Alex spends the effort to look for a job around his hometown, his efforts are fruitless and he comes home with no progress made.

Later that night, Alex meets an entity inside his home who leads him to an abandoned radio tower not far from his home. Inside he finds an empty sleeve of the Mystical Ultima LP Legend record. The entity encourages Alex to find it, despite not giving a reason why. Alex jumps on the opportunity the next day, and asks his local Record Stop if they have a copy, but they don't have one. He is pointed to check out Wind Town's Record Stop instead, which frustrates Alex as he doesn't want to go alone. He tries to drag Vella along, but she criticizes him. Alex tries to explain the importance of finding this record, but something triggers Vella to freak out.

Outside, Alex meets up with Michael, and the two head off to Wind Town. Michael heavily encourages Alex to apologize to Rory for the things he said, which can optionally be done. The gang arrive at the Wind Town Record Stop, and they also do not have the record. The group eventually finds their way to Flag Town, which contains the Record Stop's flagship store. Again, they do not have it, but store owner Claudio recognizes the name of the LP from ONISM. Intrigued by the mystery, he tags along with them and brings his sister Chondra to head to Mt. Town, where a family friend named Mark has a large collection of records they could check.

Alex finding the LP inside of Vella's mind.

Arriving at Mark's place, Mark also doesn't have the record, but he reads the jacket and figures out the reason why: the record isn't set to release until the dawn of the new millennium. He also reads the artist's name- Vella Wilde. Alex, bewildered at himself for not paying enough attention to the jacket, goes back to Vella and asks where they can find the record. They decide to enter her Mind Dungeon to retrieve it. Once collected, they first listen to it in Alex's Room before dropping the needle at the radio tower. The record receives lukewarm reception by the group, which causes Vella to run away to the park.

Alex, worried about her, and also seeing a chance to make an emotional connection, talks to her about what's wrong. She explains a deeply traumatic experience where her ex-boyfriend mysteriously disappeared until a year later, where she saw him with a woman far younger than her. Alex can optionally kiss Vella, causing her to awkwardly push him away. They both agree to go to the radio tower.

The Y2K Problem[edit | edit source]

The party heads to the Radio Tower to broadcast the Mystical Ultima LP Legend, where the music awakens the android Alex has been dreaming about. Both Alex and Vella enter an "epileptic fit" where they witness the android waking up from her bed and killing entities. After this, Alex becomes determined to try and save the android, though Vella thinks it's pretty clear she can fend for herself.

After getting a lead from Rory, Alex gets Claudio to drive them around New Jersey to find the van which will hopefully have the android. They arrive at the Twin Pines Mall and find the van they've been looking for, but first have to deal with Mall Rats who claim they were working with the entities and driving the van around. After opening the van, Alex gets transported by the android, who reveals themselves to be called The Essentia 2000.

Alex's reaction to the Proto-Comet dropping onto Earth.

Alex goes through Essentia's Mind Dungeon. The Essentia 2000 warns him of his greatest flaw- destruction. She convinces Alex that all realities will eventually end, and that he will be the one to cause his reality to end. Alex doesn't believe it at first, but comes to realize it as the truth. Despite the Essentia warning him that it's impossible to stop it, Alex convinces himself that if he is strong enough he can defeat himself.

Alex prepares the rest of the group to stop himself from destroying reality. He decides it's connected to the Y2K dilemma, and that on the dawn of the new year they will have to fight. On New Years Eve, they drive to New York City and see a comet with Alex's face on it, plummeting towards earth. They prepare themselves for the battle, but no matter what they do, they cannot overcome it. The party members get "banished" by the comet, and the Essentia sacrifices herself to protect Alex's life.

Ending 1[edit | edit source]

After reality is destroyed and Alex's friends are banished, Alex traverses the Soul Space. There, he loses his stuffed Panda, no longer deluding himself that it is a living being. He comes across the Alex Planet and meets other parallel selves who didn't even try to stop the end from coming. Enraged by the idea of more realities ending, he comes up with a plan to stop the destruction. He finds the player's reality and gets their versions of Michael, Vella, Rory, Claudio, Chondra and Essentia to fight against the Proto-Comet. They destroy it from within by defeating the four Proto-Alexes, each representing a negative trait of his..

Alex is then met by a spectre resembling Sammy, who warns him of the terrible sight ahead, and apologizes for letting "it" use her to get Alex to this point. Alex then enters the Throne Room, where he meets Essentia 995 and Proto-Alex. Proto-Alex accuses Essentia 995 of being a liar who lured Alex here to "end their division". Essentia 995 confirms as much, admitting that Sammy's "disappearance" was just a means to an end.

Alex, enraged by the revelation, attempts to defeat the two of them (who have now fused into the Twisted Beings), but they're unbeatable. After being defeated and sent to Heaven, Alex receives a pep talk from Roy Guarder, the protagonist of Two Brothers, who tells Alex to keep on fighting, and that he should think about things in a different way. Back in the Throne Room, Alex and The Player work together to pull the plugs around Essentia 995 and Proto-Alex, despite Essentia 995's claim that "everything will go back to the way it was". They pull both their plugs, and the division ends.

Skill PP Description Notes
Beatdown 2 "Beat down!" A record spins, tapping on the yellow nodes adds to your combo while red allows you to keep spinning. The yellow node can be tapped repeatedly as well, and using Time Energy with it can rack up a huge combo.
Panda B 5 "Helps in blocking enemy attacks for 2 Cycles. Panda HP must be over 0." It is notable that by "blocking attacks" it specifically means that you won't have to deal with any dodging minigames, making surviving far easier.

Obtained by finding Panda at the Factory Hotel.

EP Strike 5 "Use PP to generate strike with devastating force!" Uses a similar minigame as Beat Down, but only with the red node.

Obtained at level 16.

Smooth Jazz 5 "Put a target to sleep." Uses a similar minigame as Beat Down, but only with the red node.

Obtained at level 4.

LP Toss 5 "Throw LP's at all foes." The amount of targets to hit is dependent on the amount of enemies in the battle. Some targets behave differently when being hit- some may turn the other direction, or continue moving forward. It is recommended to use it when there are a lot of enemies on field so a combo can be easily racked up. Targets which change direction when hit are far easier to get a high combo with.

Obtained at level 8.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Alex moved from Frankton to Jetset City for college.
  • Early in development, Alex wore a blue flannel.
  • Alex is a playable character in the free to play platform fighter Cross Impact.
  • The cancelled platform fighter Indie Rumble was going to have Alex in its roster of indie game characters.
  • Alex edited a video for the Alex Yiik YouTube channel.
  • For a 2016 PlayStation demo, Alex's ONISM username was PSXMAN99.
  • In earlier versions of the game, Alex's Panda Barrier would defend the party for 3 turns and didn't have a health bar.
    • It was also slightly bugged. When you first used Panda Barrier, it would defend for 1 turn. Then every time you used it after, it would correctly defend for 3 turns.
  • Before 1.25, LP Toss' damage was independent from the combo gotten. Getting a 1 combo vs a 999 combo would result in similar damage.
