Semi "Sammy" Pak is a character in YIIK: A Post-Modern RPG and the first party member you can recruit. After being kidnapped by entities in an elevator, users on ONISM become obsessed with her disappearance.

Personality[edit | edit source]

A lover of cats, and other things, probably.

Sammy is a mysterious young woman who speaks with confidence about her uncertainties and fears. Through Alex's recollections in the story, he sees a woman who's upfront, yet polite, about her skepticism towards Alex, going as far as to call Alex rude for questioning her circumstances ("I wouldn't call your house a... Rathole..."). Alex sees a woman who's afraid of the world, and has a disdain for others - though she never acts aggressively towards Alex. Instead, she keeps many aspects about herself a mystery to him; Alex describes Sammy as a "...a very difficult girl to read," and that "She really projected her opinions and feelings into the room, even without saying them." Alex first sees her within the Factory Hotel, sat by peacefully by herself, alluding to her being an introverted individual.

Another very important part of her personality is her contradictory conversations and beliefs, alongside her seeming lack of knowledge of a normal, modern life. Within the factory hotel, Sammy contradicts herself multiple times. An obvious example of this is her contradictory knowledge of elevators, by stating "An elevator? I don't know what that is..." - which is soon followed by the encounter with Wilhelm, where she directly references and understands what an elevator is supposed to be. She also refers to the factory hotel as her home, and as "part of her", something Alex attempts to question, with little answer.

Because of these seemingly odd personality traits that Alex believes she has, he finds himself drawn to her. However, it's very likely that none of these traits are applicable to the real "Semi Pak", another one of Alex's fabrications.

Relationships[edit | edit source]

Dali[edit | edit source]

Sammy seems to value Dali over all else. She's quick to correct Alex when he describes Dali in a way that doesn't suit her vision of them. While he's missing, Sammy is visibly distraught and worried about her.

Alex[edit | edit source]

At first, Sammy is distrustful of Alex. Though after a short conversation she begins trusting him, remarking that she "...always had a special spot for gingers." Once she finds Dali again, she seems pretty disinterested towards Alex and assumes he cares about Dali as much as she does. She's also willing to insult him a bit. When she gets taken by the entities, she begs for Alex to save her.

Wilhelm[edit | edit source]

Sammy dislikes Wilhelm's presence, noting their tardiness with rent and generally insufferable attitude. However, due to Sammy's nonconfrontational, she didn't have the courage to evict them. With the help of Alex, Sammy gathers up the determination to "evict" them.

Story[edit | edit source]

Not a whole lot is known about Sammy, other than what little information the users on ONISM can gather. Alex can't really describe what's going on with her either, "There were weird gaps in her knowledge that I had interpreted as her being quirky, but now I wonder if there was actually something really wrong with her."

The last time Semi Pak was seen.

Sammy was born in 1976. She was not born in the USA. It wasn't until 1992 where she moved to the US (according to BearsNecessity. ONISM Logo) Semi relocated to Easton to work at KNN. She began her internship on April 3rd, 1999. The next day, she leaves the building and never came back. Later that day, elevator footage showing her being taken away by the entities was posted on ONISM, causing mass speculation on the forum. Some users, like eightmallet and reactionnod, speculate its from a movie. According to imperfectpicket, Semi is a huge dog lover, and owns a dog named Ernst.

One user, superbpudding, claims to be Semi. No one seems to believe her, but some of the details told by them line up with when Alex met with Sammy.

Alex's Recollection[edit | edit source]

In Alex's perspective, he found Sammy at the abandoned Factory. She also owns a cat named Dali, who she dearly loves. He witnesses the disappearance of Sammy in person, but is unable to save her. Despite this, neither Alex nor Dali are seen in the elevator footage.

Spectre[edit | edit source]

Before Alex meets Proto-Alex, a Spectre resembling Sammy appears to him. She apologizes to Alex about "it," and how "it" lied to Alex to get him here. She also appreciates that Alex tried his best to look for her. Before leaving, she gives Alex a hug. However, with a different appearance, different voice actor, and not even being called "Sammy," it's safe to assume that this isn't the same Sammy Alex met at the beginning of his adventure.

Essentia 995 says she used Sammy's disappearance as a catalyst to motivate Alex to come to The Throne Room and end the division between her and Proto-Alex.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Sammy's quote of saying "...the world has used me so unkindly, I fear it's made me suspicious of everyone," is actually a quote of Mary Anning, a famous fossil collector.
  • In the old battle mode, her skills Beatdown and Healing Song are both copies of Vella's, hinting that they are parallel souls.
  • The character of Sammy was inspired by famous missing women and those who obsess over them.[1] The most notable influence was the community surrounding the death of Elisa Lam, which writer Andrew Allanson found particularly depressing.[2]
  • In early previews of YIIK I.V, the Rally skill would give 2-5 PP instead.
  • Vella and Sammy share the same beatdown minigame and affinity.

An Interview with Andrew Allanson of Ackk Studios by IamRobin - "It was really sad to see people build these stories around very little information and extrapolate something that never went missing in the first place. Some weird version of a person they've never met who had a horrible and tragic life. That they fetishize. In a way it gives them meaning. But it's all based on this weird myth that talking about them can somehow solve a case, or bring someone back. The community looking into Elisa Lam was one of the sadder places. I think it was likely posts around her that inspired the behavior of Alex."
